3:38 Thereupon Zachariah prayed to his Lord, saying, “My Lord, grant me by Your grace virtuous offspring[1], for You are the All-Hearer of prayers.”

3:39 The angels called out to him while he was standing in the prayer chamber praying, “Allah gives you glad tidings of John, who will confirm a Word from Allah[1] and will be a noble leader, abstinent [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous.”

3:40 He said: “My Lord, how can I have a son when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?” He said, “Thus Allah does what He wills.”

3:41 He said, “My Lord, give me a sign.” He said, “Your sign is that you will not speak to people for three days except by gestures. And remember your Lord often and glorify Him in the evening and the morning.”

3:42 And [remember] when the angels said, “O Mary, Allah has chosen you, purified you, and chosen you over all women.

3:43 O Mary, worship your Lord devoutly, prostrate yourself and bow down with those who bow down.”

3:44 This is from the stories of the unseen that We reveal to you [O Prophet]; you were not with them when they cast lots as to which of them should take guardianship of Mary, nor were you with them when they disputed about it.

3:45 [Remember] when the angels said, “O Mary, Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him[1], whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary; honorable in this world and the Hereafter, and one of those near [to Allah].
